Quiet at the end of a long day. The work is done, everyone, including the birds, have left, leaving our man with the orange hat to enjoy the soft pink aura of sunset. Except for me, of course, ever watching and lurking around the dock for a beautiful moment like this. Yes, there are things yet to rinse and put away, but the solitude of the dock, which is usually loud, chaotic, and cluttered, combined with the evening glow is like a jewel, a reward for a hard day of work. I am lucky to have been here this day and glad that I could capture this harmonious moment.
Orange Hat was an Excellence Award Winner at the 11th Biennial. Here is what Judge Steven J. Levin had to say,
"A marvelous composition of interesting abstract shapes with just enough modeling to describe the scene. "
I was excited because I am breaking away from photo-realism. The technical proficiency of that style was not enough for me and I started to incorporate abstraction and texture to create a sense of atmosphere.
About Orange Hat, ASMA Fellow Sheri Farabaugh said "I am a real fan of paintings that find beauty in unlikely places. Donna's painting uses a strong abstract composition, strong value contrast, circular design and overlapping shapes to lead our eye gradually, but ultimately to the orange hat. Soft complimentary colors and a wide variety of shapes and lines add to the beauty of the painting."
This painting was juried into the:
Laumeister Fine Art Competition at the Bennington Center for the Arts, Bennington Vermont.
11th Biennial National Art Exhibition in Punta Gorda, Florida - Excellence Award Winner.
Conroe Art League 4th Annual National Invitational, Conroe, Texas and
Exhibition at the Old Post Office Museum and Art Center in Graham, Texas.
Southern Appalachian Artists Guild (SAAG) National Juried Show
For 2020, Orange Hat traveled to several museums in the American Society of Marine Artists 18th National Exhibition.
